The fire service is investigating whether a fire at a tin-shed warehouse in Dhaka's Suritola on Thursday originated from a gas line or cylinder leakage, Fire Service and Civil Defence Director (Operation and Maintenance) Lt Col Mohammad Tajul Islam Chowdhury has said.
“We found the presence of gas lines and gas cylinders at the scene after extinguishing the fire. We will know the cause of the fire after investigation, and only then it will be clear whether the fire originated from a gas line leakage or cylinder,” Tajul Islam said on Friday.
“The fire occurred at a warehouse and a dorm for the warehouse workers. A total of 20 warehouses were burnt due to the fire,” said the director.
This fire service official also said firefighters faced difficulties reaching the site of the fire and their attempt to tame the blaze was somewhat hampered by the curious crowd trying to extinguish the fire.
Tajul Islam said the fire service received news of the fire at 10:08pm on Thursday and ten firefighting units reached the scene within 10 minutes. Later, four more units joined them.
Bangla Tribune“A total of 14 firefighting units successfully controlled the fire after nearly one and a half hours of effort,” he said.
“No casualties were reported in the incident,” he added.
An investigation committee will be formed over this incident, and the extent of the damage will be known after the investigation, said this fire service official.
Army troops were also deployed to battle the fire, the Inter Services Public Relations (ISPR) directorate said.
Similar incidents in Dhaka and other parts of the country have raised concerns about fire safety, with a massive fire burning to the ground the Bangabazar wholesale clothing market on April 4.
