Dhaka commuters in the capital are passing another day of suffering as there are huge traffic jams in various roads of the capital since Tuesday morning, the second working day of the holy month of Ramadan.
The capital's Uttara, Banani, Mohakhali, Jahangir Gate, Bijoy Sarani intersection, Farmgate, Shahbagh, Matsya Bhaban and Paltan roads have witnessed heavy traffic since morning.
Apart from the office going passengers, the passengers going to different destinations have to wait in the traffic for a long time.
However, traffic pressure is slightly less on various roads of the capital on Tuesday as compared to Monday.
Apart from that, in continuation of the development activities of various roads, the road repair work is going on. Because of this, the roads are now narrowed, causing a lot of traffic in those areas.
For Monday's experience, many people had to leave their homes before the scheduled time but got stuck in the traffic jam.
Mamun, a resident of Uttara, an official of a private bank in Motijheel of the capital, said that traffic congestion has increased due to Ramadan. He was sitting in the traffic jam before the army stadium to enter Dhaka from Uttara.
Rashidul Haque, a resident of Mohammadpur in Dhaka, said: "Yesterday (Monday), I could not return home before iftar while for a minor task after office. Due to traffic jam, iftar has to be done on the road.”
Obaidul, a resident of Mirpur, said that he planned to go to Dhanmondi this morning following the traffic update. He left home after 11am thinking that there would not be heavy traffic jams in the morning.
“At that time, there was not much traffic on the Kalyanpur road. I was able to reach the destination easily,” he said.
When asked about the traffic jam, Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police Jahangir Alam of Tejgaon Traffic Division of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) said: "There was heavy traffic in the morning at various important intersections including Bijoy Sarani, Sat Rasta intersection. Due to the pressure of office-goers, traffic slowed down in the morning.”
“Besides, we observed on Monday, we had to wait for a long time on the road due to traffic before iftar. We are working on these issues,” said the police official.
Dhaka city commuters suffered heavy traffic congestion on the first working day of the holy month of Ramadan on Monday.
