A torch procession has been held by Bangladesh Student Rights Council in protest of the reported night-long torture of a student by Chhatra League members because they suspected he was a Shibir activist.
This procession was taken out from the Raju Memorial Sculpture at Dhaka University on Tuesday evening.
In the pre-march rally, BSRC President Bin Yamin Molla said: “Last Sunday night a student was repeatedly thrashed in the manner of how Shaheed Abrar had been beaten up. He was assaulted once more in the morning and thrown out of the hall. Because he declined to attend Chhatra League's ‘guest room program', he was subjected to inhumane torture. This inhumane behaviour by Chhatra League is condemned and protested by us. Justice must be served right away against those responsible for this crime.”
Ariful Islam Adib, general secretary of BSRC, said: "The torture of students in the halls of Dhaka University reminds us of Abu Garib prison."
“Chhatra League continues to suppress opposition. Those in charge of the halls receive compensation. However, they only visit the halls on particular days,” he added.
Tariqul Islam, vice president of the council, said: "We have always spoken out against student abuse. We shall put up posters of every Chhatra League leader engaged in torture in their respective regions in order to put an end to this kind of abuse. Their names and identities will be highlighted so that locals are aware of the leaders of Chhatra League are involved in torture.”
