DMP Commissioner Khandker Golam Faruq has requested all to refrain from using any kind of fireworks, firecrackers or sky lanterns New Year's Eve, as the world readies to ring in 2023.
While addressing a press conference at DMP Media Center on Saturday, the commissioner said open-space events will not be allowed on December 31.
However, there is no bar on indoor parties, he said.
The commissioner said bars in Dhaka will be closed after 6pm.
He said entry of outsiders to Gulshan, Banani and Baridhara is prohibited from 8pm.
However, the Amtali-Kakoli crossing will be open to enter the areas.
He requested people of those areas to be at their homes by 8pm.
Traffic movement will also be suspended in the Hatirjheel area from 8pm, he added.
Khandker Golam Faruq said: "The Fire Service and ambulances will be ready at different points of the city. Divers will be deployed in the Hatirjheel area. However, no vehicles will be allowed to enter Hatirjheel after dusk.”
The DMP Commissioner said necessary measures will be taken to stop honking of loud horns and joyrides. Alcohol breath tests will also be carried out to ensure there is not drunk driving, he said.
Plainclothesmen have been deployed across the capital, he said adding: “SWAT, bomb disposal unit and dog squad will be ready for any untoward incidents.”
The DMP commissioner requested the residents of the city to call the police in case of any emergency.
He said outsiders will not be allowed to enter the Dhaka University area after 6pm. “Teachers, officials and employees living in that residential area of the campus can enter through the Shahbagh intersection after the specified time but they have to provide identification,” he said.
They can also enter on foot through the Nilkhet intersection, he added.
