Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) Mayor Sheikh Fazle Noor Taposh said that the width of the old Buriganga channel has increased 10 times after the demarcation, eviction of encroachers and the start of waste removal program.
He gave this information during an exchange with the media after inspecting the ongoing evacuation, cleaning and digging activities in the Buriganga old channel on Wednesday morning.
Focus BanglaHe said: “The Buriganga has been filled with sewage for over 50 years. This is the first time we have undertaken restoration work on it. Following the expensive and difficult process, we have been able to increase the width of the channel by 10 times and our operations are ongoing.”
Pointing out that the Buriganga channel restoration work is going on despite the obstacles of the squatters, the mayor said: “There were many obstacles here. Many cases have also been filed. The High Court Division have taken action against it and we are continuing the proceedings.”
He said: “In the initial phase, we have allocated money through our own financing. Also in between we have hired consultants and fresh project estimates are in progress.”
Focus Bangla“Our main goal is to fully restore the river and ensure none grabs it or litters it,” he added.
Moreover, walking and cycling paths are being made on both sides of the river. Public spaces are being arranged, so that an aesthetic environment is created and tourists can visit, the mayor added.
