MP Kamrul: Want Buriganga to get back to its glory days

He said people who are behind the illegal grabbing of rivers across the country belong to the government party

Bemoaning the current situation of the Buriganga River due to pollution, former minister and Dhaka 2 MP Advocate Kamrul Islam has said that he wants to see the river get back to its previous glory that he saw 60 years.

He blamed different political parties including BNP and Jatiya Party for the current situation of Buriganga.

“I don't want to make a political statement here though. But I have to say that Buriganga and Dhaka was ruined by Ziaur Rahman and Ershad. The proof is Dholaikhal. Zia started it and after that Ershad completed the full circle,” he said.

The Dhaka 2 MP was speaking at the event titled "Buriganga River Carnival: In Pursuit of Pollution Free River" on Saturday.

Waterkeepers Bangladesh Consortium in collaboration with Buriganga Nadi Morcha (Buriganga River Coalition) organised the event.

He said people who are behind the illegal grabbing of rivers across the country belong to the government party.

He mentioned the necessary treatment plant that will soon be implemented in Buriganga and the way houses will be destroyed to save this river.  Also, there will be a 100 feet road on the river bank.

He also clarified the government’s plan of starting water buses in Dhaka city. He said that if the river pollution stops, it will be possible to start these boats and traffic congestion in Dhaka will be reduced to a large extent.

After that, Former advisor Sultana Kamal asked the question that why people can commit wrongdoings even after being associated with the government party.

General Secretary of Dhaka Metropolitan South Awami League Humayun Kabir, Human Rights and Governance Mrs Christine McRae and Md Rakibul Islam of Bangladesh Inland Navigation Authority were present as special guests in this event.
