A total of two policemen have been temporarily suspended over the suicide of a prisoner in the capital's Hatirjheel police station.

Azimul Haque, deputy commissioner of police (Tejgaon), said the CCTV footage showed that the youth committed suicide by using his trouser as a rope to hang himself to death.

“Two officers have been suspended for negligence of duty. A three-member investigation committee has been formed in this incident,” he added.

On Saturday, Roman’s relative Sohel told the Bangla Tribune: “We learned from the police that Roman committed suicide after 3pm on Friday in police custody. How can a suspect commit suicide in police custody?”

Alleging that it was the negligence of police duty, he demanded proper action be taken in this incident.

On Friday, police arrested deceased Roman, 19, in a case filed over theft.

According to police, he was initially arrested and kept in Hatirjheel police station custody at night as he was found to be involved in the crime.

The body was taken to Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical College Hospital for autopsy.

Meanwhile, the locals are protesting in front of the Hatirjheel police station citing it as murder. Additional police were deployed in the area to deal with any untoward situation.
