4 Jamaat leaders released after brief detention in Dhaka

Police say the leaders were initially detained to ascertain if any prior cases were pending against them

Update : 30 May 2023, 12:28 AM

Four leaders of Jamaat-e-Islami were briefly detained before being released by the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) on Monday.

The incident unfolded when the leaders arrived at the DMP office seeking permission to organize a protest program on June 5.

The detained leaders are Advocate Saifur Rahman, Advocate Jalal Uddin Bhuiyan, Advocate Abdul Karim and Advocate Mostafizur Rahman.

According to DMP Deputy Commissioner (Ramana Division) Md Ashraf Hossain, the leaders were initially detained to ascertain if any prior cases were pending against them.

However, no cases were found, and all four leaders were subsequently released around 7:30pm on Monday evening.

The detentions sparked criticism from Jamaat-e-Islami, which stated that the act violated constitutional rights and undermined the principles of human rights.

Jamaat had applied for permission to hold the protest program on four previous occasions but had been denied permission each time. During their fifth attempt, seeking permission for the rally, the leaders were detained.

On the other hand, police claimed that the leaders were not detained but rather questioned for identity verification and to determine their involvement in any previous cases.

Police said that the leaders were taken to the DMP headquarters for verification and later met with DMP officials to discuss the permission for the planned rally.
