Teep assault allegations against constable found true

Argument started when the teacher questioned the now-suspended constable about him riding his bike in the wrong lane of the road, says probe panel

A probe panel looking into the reported harassment of a college teacher by a policeman claims to have found some evidence proving the allegation to be true.

The committee was supposed to submit its report on Thursday, but it will take it another couple of days to do so in order to verify some of the information, Bangla Tribune reported citing a source familiar with the matter.

“An argument broke out between the teacher and the constable as the latter was riding his motorcycle in the wrong lane of the road. But their accounts on the incident are different, which are being cross-checked,” the report quoted an official, asking not to be named.

“The main reason for the argument was that Constable Nazmul Tarek was riding his motorcycle in the wrong lane,” the official reiterated. “Nazmul apparently became vexed when Lota Sumaddaer questioned him about it, leading to the altercation.”

However, the committee has yet to reach a conclusion on their argument regarding Lota’s wearing a teep, a traditional adornment.

A theatre and media studies lecturer at Dhaka’s Tejgaon College, Lota on April 2 filed a complaint at Sher-e-Bangla Nagar police station alleging that a policeman had grilled her about the teep on her forehead, before hurling abuses and threatening to kill her.

There was widespread outcry on social media after the news of the incident broke.

Later, the police on April 4 identified Nazmul as being the officer in question and suspended him after taking him into custody.
