The Anti-Terrorism Unit (ATU) of the police has arrested a member of the banned militant group Harkat ul-Jihad al-Islami Bangladesh (HujiB) who was sentenced to 10 years and a half in prison.

Convict Sharifuzzaman was arrested on Friday morning from the Uttara West police station area, said ATU's Media and Awareness Branch Superintendent of Police Mohammad Aslam Khan.

Sharifuzzaman, who also went by the aliases Mintu, Obaidullah, Mahi, and Sharif, had become traceless after getting bail.

He had been hiding in Uttara with his wife and two children for a long time, the ATU official added.

“He passed BBA from a private university and was earning from freelance jobs,” said SP Aslam.

On October 7, 2013, four leaders of the HujiB were arrested with weapons and ammunition in a raid on Ashulia Bypass Road.

Among them, Sharifuzzaman was acting as the finance secretary of the organization at the time.

A case was filed against them under the Explosives Act 1884 and the Arms Act 1878 with Turag police station.

HujiB is the Bangladesh chapter of the Pakistan-based militant group. Formed by some Afghan war veterans, the al-Qaeda follower group started operation in Bangladesh officially in 1992 with a view to implement Sharia laws. The government banned the outfit in 2005 for carrying out fatal attacks.
