Dhaka traffic surges on fifth day of lockdown

The government extended its strict lockdown with stay-at-home orders for citizens by another week

The fifth day of the hard lockdown has seen an increase in traffic in Dhaka as the country battles to curb rising cases of the coronavirus.

Traffic congestion has been seen at various points in the capital while movement of more people were spotted in some parts since Monday morning, reports Bangla Tribune.

However, lenders are operating on a limited scale in line with the central bank’s order.

Besides, more emergency vehicles, alongside cars, motorcycles and rickshaws, are plying the roads as all emergency service offices are open now.

Earlier on June 30, the Cabinet Division issued a gazette notification imposing a number of rules and regulations as part of the lockdown measure from July 1-7.

On Sunday, the health authorities reported 153 deaths in a single day, the highest since the pandemic disease broke out in Bangladesh last year. With the latest tally, the countrywide death toll now stands at 15,065.

Meanwhile, another 8,661 people tested positive over the 24-hour period, raising the total caseload in the country to 944,917.
