A police constable has died in a road accident in the Dhanmondi area of capital Dhaka.

The victim, Bashir Talukder of Dumki upazila, Patuakhali, had served as a bodyguard of Omar Faruk, assistant commissioner of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (Mirpur zone).

Dhanmondi police station Sub-Inspector (SI) Polash Biswas said Bashir was found critically injured following the accident on Dhanmondi Road 7 in the early hours of Saturday.

He said Bashir might have been hit by a vehicle while riding his bicycle on way to his Mirpur home.

Bashir was taken to a local hospital where the on-duty doctor declared him dead, said the SI.

The body was later sent to the Dhaka Medical College morgue for autopsy.

"We are trying to identify the vehicle that caused the accident," added SI Biswas.
