The residents of Mirpur and its adjoining localities experienced a suspension of the gas supply from 8am on Thursday, due to the relocation of gas pipelines to facilitate construction of the Dhaka metro rail project.
After 16 hours of suffering, the gas supply resumed around 12am on Friday.
During this period, there was no gas supply in different areas of Mirpur, including Manipur, Kazipara, Shewrapara, Pirerbagh, Barabagh, Senpara, Agargaon, Taltala, Mirpur 1, 2, 6, 7 and 14, Paikpara, Ibrahimpur, North Kafrul, Parbata, Kallyanpur, Shyamoli and Ansar Camp.
Earlier, in a statement on Wednesday, Titas Gas Transmission and Distribution Company Ltd had informed that the gas supply would be temporarily suspended from 10am till 8pm in the areas of Mirpur and Agargaon, due to the shipment of gas pipelines during the time.However, the gas supply was suspended at 8am, two hours before the declared time, and resumed late because of technical complications.
When contacted, Titas Gas Manager (Public Relations) Mohammad Wahiduzzaman told the Dhaka Tribune: “Due to the relocation of gas pipelines to facilitate construction work of the Dhaka metro rail project, the gas supply was cut off and it resumed around 9pm.”
“But, in some areas, the supply resumed late due to technical complications of the work,” he added.
Md Tajul Islam, a resident of Kallyanpur, told the Dhaka Tribune that the suffering caused by the crisis was “beyond description,” as people could not cook and had to resort to buying food from restaurants.
In addition, restaurant worker Rasel Hawladar said they had to cook using liquefied petroleum gas and faced acute pressure due to the number of customers from early morning till midnight.
“The customers were standing in long queues to take parcels as they could not cook at home, but it was really tough providing food for thousands of people. We had to stay open till 3am on Thursday night,” he said.
The residents of Mirpur and its adjoining areas further complained that they have been suffering frequently from such shutdowns ever since work commenced on the metro rail project in the area, about a year ago.
