Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) Mayor Sheikh Fazle Noor Taposh has warned that the city corporation will resume the removal of overhead cables by this month if internet service providers (ISP) and cable operators do not do so themselves.
During a weekly inspection near the Abahani playground at Dhanmondi in Dhaka on Tuesday, the mayor told reporters that they had extended the deadline to take down the cables till December 31.
“The Internet Service Providers of Bangladesh (ISPAB) and Cable Operators Association of Bangladesh (COAB) were given the chance to remove the overhead cables and plant those underground within a certain period, after a recent discussion,” he said.
“To make this happen, Dhanmondi was selected first and I’m here today to inspect the progress of the initiative, but it is not satisfactory,” he added.
“The cable operators and ISPs, however, claimed to me that they can complete the task by the end of December,” added the DSCC mayor.
“If they fail to keep their promise, we’ll resume the removal of overhead wires,” Taposh concluded, without stating exactly when the drives against overhead cables will resume.
On November 18, the DSCC suspended its drive to cut overhead cables till November 30 and asked ISPs to use underground connectivity to provide internet services.
Prior to that, the two city corporations in Dhaka had started cutting overhead cables from August for the beautification of the capital.
