Mistreating patients: 2 hospitals closed down, 6 jailed

Operation theatre assistants with limited know-how were found conducting surgery by themselves

Six men have been imprisoned and two hospitals sealed by a mobile court in Dhaka for mistreating patients.

The arrests were made on a raid, led by Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) Executive Magistrate Palash Kumar Basu, conducted in three private hospitals in Mohammadpur and Shyamoli areas on Wednesday night.

The Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) also took part in the raid encompassing the Crescent Hospital & Diagnostic Centre, the Makka Madina General Hospital, and the Noorjahan Orthopaedic and General Hospital.

Following the raid, the Makka Madina General Hospital and the Noorjahan Orthopaedic and General Hospital were sealed by the court, said Magistrate Palash.

During the raid at the Makka Madina General Hospital, operation theatre (OT) assistants were caught performing surgery by themselves.

OT assistant Jahangir Alam of Noorjahan Orthopaedic and General Hospital, who had studied up to fifth grade, was also found conducting surgery.

Crescent Hospital & Diagnostic Centre owner Abul Hossain was also found guilty of introducing himself as a professor despite only studying up to secondary level.

For their offences, two owners, a broker, and an OT assistant received one year of imprisonment, and two other OT assistants received six months of imprisonment.
