As many as 12 leaders of the Dhaka north city BNP have been expelled for reportedly being linked to the attack on the house of the party’s Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on Saturday.

ABMA Razzaq, BNP's Dhaka north city unit office secretary, confirmed the matter to Dhaka Tribune.

He said that the decision was taken after examining the video footage of the attack.

Dhaka city unit BNP’s president, senior vice-president and acting general secretary on Monday signed the expulsion order taken in accordance with the Section 5 (c) of the party's constitution.

The expelled leaders are, Dakkhinkhan thana BNP vice president Phul Islam, members of the same unit Nazimuddin Dewan and Amjad Hossain, 50 No Ward general secretary Amanullah, organizing secretary Mokhles, Uttar Purba thana organizing secretaries Taizul Islam and Matiur Rahman Moti, joint general secretary MA Hannan Milon, office secretary Habibur Rahman, expatriate welfare affairs secretary Abdul Quader Swapan, labour affairs secretary Harunur Rashid and Uttar Khan thana unit member Nur Mohammad.

Earlier on Saturday afternoon, a group of supporters of BNP leader M Kofiluddin Ahmed -- around 100 of them -- reportedly launched an attack on BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir's house in the capital's Uttara Sector 4 while he was inside.

At one point they started demonstrating in front of the top BNP leader's house demanding the party's decision of nominating SM Jahangir for the upcoming Dhaka 18 by-polls to be revoked.

They also chanted various slogans in favour of Kofiluddin and demanded his candidacy.

However, BNP in its immediate reaction claimed that government agents were responsible for the attack on Fakhrul's house.

In a statement soon after the attack, Senior Joint Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi said the party's standing committee discussed the matter at a meeting on Saturday night and strongly condemned it.

On Friday, BNP picked SM Jahangir as its candidate for the Dhaka 18 by-election, for which Kofiluddin faced an interview on September 12 by BNP's nomination board to secure the party nomination.

The Dhaka 18 seat fell vacant following the death of former minister and Awami League presidium member Sahara Khatun on July 9.
