A student of Dhaka University (DU), who sued the recently-suspended convener of Bangladesh Students’ Rights Council Hasan Al Mamun for alleged rape, has started a fast-unto-death at the university, demanding his arrest along with the five rape abettors.
Former DU Central Students' Union (Ducsu) vice president (VP) Nurul Haque Nur is one of the five accused of assisting Mamun in the rape.
Surrounded by several others, she started her protest to press home the demand at the base of Raju Memorial Sculpture on DU campus around 8:30pm on Thursday.
“They are roaming freely despite being accused of rape. So I had no choice but to go for the hunger strike that I will continue until all the accused are arrested,” she told reporters.
The reported victim is a postgraduate student of the university’s Islamic Studies Department and also a member of the student body that Mamun used to lead.

She filed the case against the six individuals — all belonging to the independent student organization, and current and former students of the same university — on September 20 with Lalbagh police station.
A day later, ex-Ducsu VP Nur along with six others were detained for an alleged attack on police near Matsya Bhaban in a procession brought out to protest the case. They were released from police custody several hours later.
According to the case dockets, key accused Mamun raped the victim at his house in Old Dhaka’s Lalbagh area on January 3.
The others accused of abetting the crime are Nazmul Hassan Shohag and Md Saiful Islam, joint conveners of Bangladesh Students’ Rights Council, Nazmul Huda, VP of the organization’s DU unit, and Abdullah Hil Baki, a student of the university and an activist of the organization.
The DU student sued them again on September 21 with Kotwali police station under the Digital Security Act.
Notably, Nur has joined the anti-rape protests being held at Shahbagh since Monday.
