Criminal Investigation Department (CID) on Tuesday arrested a man who reportedly amassed around Tk3 crore by scamming job seekers.
Aminur Islam Lalu, 42, who was apprehended from Dhaka’s Bashundhara Residential Area, has been scamming people by offering them jobs at the Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport (HSIA), CID's Senior Assistant Superintendent Jisan Ul Haque confirmed to Dhaka Tribune.
Law enforcers recovered a total of 73 Islami Bank Limited debit cards, hundreds of job applications, and fake employment letters from the office of NBG Air Cargo Ltd – a fake outsourcing company – used by Aminur and his associates, said CID.
As many as 200 people have so far fallen victim to Aminur’s trap and lost crores of Taka, CID added.
Aminur used to take money from job seekers, promising to provide them employment in the air cargo department of HSIA, said CID.
At one point a victim of the scam named Partha Pal filed a case with Dakshin Khan police station against Aminul for taking money from him after promising employment at the HSIA.
Pal, in the complaint, said that Aminul initially took Tk2 lakh from him and then forced him to bring other job aspirants.
Following which Pal brought some others to Aminul in hopes of employment, he added in the complaint.
A few days later, he realized that he along with the people he had brought were being conned. Hence, Pal filed a complaint which led to a CID drive in which Aminul was arrested.
Jishan said some 50 to 60 victims had contacted CID after learning about Lalu's arrest.
Aminul has collected around Tk2 to Tk3 crore from these victims by promising employment, the CID official said.
CID said that they are conducting drives and investigating the case to arrest others involved in the scam.
