Three workers have died falling from a 10th storey under-construction building in Dhanmondi of Dhaka.

The deceased, Insan, Osman and Shofikul, were plastering the building on a bamboo platform which suddenly collapsed to the ground.

Dhanmondi police station Sub Inspector (SI) Md Mainul Islam confirmed the matter yesterday.

Of them, Shofikul died on the spot, while the other two were declared dead after they were taken to Square Hospital in Panthapath.

Deceased Shofikul’s body was sent to Dhaka Medical College and Hospital (DMCH).

All three workers hailed from Chapainawabganj district.

Aroz Ali, caretaker of the under-construction building, was inside the building.

He said 18 to 19 workers were working in the building.

"They were [the three] plastering the building from outside, standing on a bamboo platform on tenth floor. Suddenly the platform collapsed," he said.

Asaduzzaman Hiron, another witness, who was crossing the building at that time.

"While passing the building, I heard a sudden bang. Turning back, I saw a bamboo platform collapsed on the ground. One of the worker’s head was crushed while limbs of the other two were not moving," said Hiron.

However, visiting the spot this correspondent found that there were bamboos tied up from the ground to the top of the building.

There were no nets outside the building and workers were not seen using safety gears, said the people staying near the building.

The building sits on plot 692 [old] on road 31 [old] in Dhanmondi.

As per the banner hanging in front of the building, the building belongs to Md Shaheen, who is financing the construction of the building, and the engineer is Fozlul Qader.

The contractor reportedly allowed the use bamboo, not maintaining Bangladesh National Building Code of 2006.

Dhaka Tribune, however, could not reach the owner, engineer, or the contractor for any comment.

Ruhul Amin, uncle of deceased Insan, said: "We talked to the contractor and he assured us that we would receive compensation.

"But we don't want punishment for anyone as it was an accident'," he said.
