Diploma engineers condemn govt move to lift age limit for polytechnic admission

They demanded the immediate withdrawal of the government circular which allows admission of people of any age in diploma courses

Update : 26 Aug 2020, 11:55 PM

Leaders of different bodies representing the country’s diploma engineers have condemned the recent government move to remove the age limit for diploma course admission at polytechnic institutes.

They termed the initiative as an attempt to hinder Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman’s vision regarding human resource development.

Leaders and members of the Coordination Council of Bangladesh Diploma Engineers Service Association, Bangabandhu Diploma Engineers Parishad, Bangladesh Polytechnic Teachers Parishad and Bangladesh Polytechnic Students Council made the call during a jointly organized event to observe the National Mourning Day on Wednesday.

The event was held at the auditorium of Dhaka Polytechnic Institute in Tejgaon.

Speakers at the discussion said that if implemented, the move to abolish age limit in polytechnic admission would hamper its academic atmosphere.

They demanded the immediate withdrawal of the government circular which allows admission of people of any age in diploma courses.

Senior leaders, activists, and general members of the organizations were present during the event.

Earlier on July 1, the government decided to lift the restriction on age limit for diploma course admission at polytechnic institutes.

At the same time, the minimum qualification for male students for admission to diploma courses was reduced from GPA 3.5 to 2.5 and GPA 3 of female students was reduced to 2.25.

Besides, the admission fee for diploma courses was reduced from Tk1,825 to Tk1,090.
