‘Apan Jewellers can reopen outlets’

Update : 06 Jun 2017, 02:26 AM
The Customs Intelligence Investigation Directorate (CIID) said the five outlets of Apan Jewellers can be reopened since there was no legal bar in this regard. CIID Director General (DG) Dr Moinul Khan disclosed the matter through an SMS on Monday, saying the owners of Apan Jewellers are free to reopen their Gulshan DCC Market, Gulshan Avenue, Uttara, Simanto Square and Mouchak showrooms. However, the officials and employees of Apan Jwellers said the owners were yet to decide to reopen the outlets. The outlets were sealed from May 13 to June 4 after the CIID raided those on May 13 and May 14 on allegations of smuggling. According to the CIID DG, around 567.54kg gold and 7,369 pieces of diamonds, worth Tk284.35cr, cash Tk67,40,312 and $100 were seized during the raid. The seized items were deposited in a vault of Bangladesh Bank on June 4, he added. The gold and diamond items were seized as the owners failed to submit legal documents. CIID is also probing Apan Jewellers’ owner Dildar Ahmed’s alleged link to gold smuggling. Dildar’s son Shafat Ahmed is the prime accused of the much-hyped Banani rape case filed on May 6. According to the case dockets, Shafat, Nayem Ashraf, Shadman Sakif, Shafat’s driver Billal Hossain and bodyguard Rahmat Ali on March 28 raped two female university students at The Raintree Hotel in Banani, Dhaka.
