Dhaka South City Corporation Mayor Barrister Sheikh Taposh has warned Dhaka Water Supply and Sewerage Authority (Wasa) for dumping waste in the open.
Taposh said this in an event inaugurating a yearlong sewer cleaning program at two spots of DSCC on Sunday.
“You [Wasa] can't dump waste on the streets while cleaning sewage- drains. You will be fined and legal action will be taken regarding this matter," he said.
“Sewer cleaning activities will be conducted throughout the year. These initiatives are not temporary, in fact, and will continue as all sewers in each ward would be cleaned twice every month,” the DSCC mayor added.
Calling on the people to be vigilant to ensure access to services, the Taposh said: "If a sewer gets stuck somewhere, even if it overflows or if there is waterlogging somewhere, you [general people] will inform the city corporation through your respective councilor.”
“And if things don’t get fixed then inform me directly.”
Among others, Dhaka 7 MP Haji Selim, Dhaka City Corporation Chief Executive Officer Shah Emdadul Haque, Chief Waste Management Officer Air Commodore Badrul Amin, Chief Health Officer Brigadier General Dr Sharif Ahmed, Secretary Akramuzzaman, ward 20 Councilor Farid Uddin Ratan and councilors of wards 22, and 33 were present at the event.
Earlier in the day, DSCC Mayor Taposh inaugurated a yearlong sewer cleaning program at Aga Sadeq Road in ward 33 of the capital.
