A mobile court has fined 2 people for selling fake N95 masks and sanitizers amidst the coronavirus crisis.

Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) Executive Magistrate Palash Kumar Basu confirmed the matter on Tuesday, saying that they face jail time if they fail to pay the fines.

The two turned Boishakhi Restaurant, situated in old Paltan road, into “Boishakhi Surgical” in order to take advantage of the coronavirus crisis, he said.

During a drive by RAB 3, along with Directorate General of Drug Administration, magistrate Palash fined Saiful, the proprietor of the business, Tk 1,500,000 or 3 months of jail.

He also fined Amir Hossain, a middleman who would supply the products, Tk30,000 or 15 days of jail under The Drugs Act, 1940.

“They had nothing—drug licence, NOC (No Objection Certificate),” said the magistrate.

“There were fake sanitizers in several drums and fake N95 masks, even unauthorized dengue test kits,” he added.
