Atiqul Islam, the newly elected mayor of Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC), is set to take office for the second term on Wednesday afternoon.

On the other hand, Barrister Sheikh Fazle Noor Taposh will take charge as the mayor of Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) on Saturday.

“The newly elected mayor Atiqul Islam will take charge tomorrow [Wednesday] afternoon at the DNCC office while maintaining social distancing,” Jamal Mostafa, panel mayor of DNCC, said on Tuesday.

“Barrister Sheikh Fazle Noor Taposh, the newly elected mayor of DSCC, will take office on Saturday afternoon,” Md Tariq Shikder, media coordinator of the mayor, told Dhaka Tribune.

“After taking charge, Mayor Taposh will brief the media,” he added.

DNCC Panel Mayor Jamal Mostafa will hand over charge to Atiqul Islam, while outgoing DSCC mayor Syeed Khokan will pass the baton of DSCC to Sheikh Fazle Noor Taposh.

The Awami League’s Barrister Sheikh Fazle Noor Taposh and Atiqul Islam clinched sweeping victories over the BNP’s Ishraque Hossain and Tabith Awal respectively at the recent mayoral elections.

The ruling party-nominated candidates emerged victorious at both city corporation polls held on February 1, though with only 30% of votes registered.

The newly elected mayors and councillors of both city corporations took the oaths of office on February 27.

Atiqul and Taposh are taking charge of the city corporations amid the ongoing coronavirus outbreak in the country.
