Leaders of Bangladesh Medical Association (BMA) and Swadhinata Chikitsak Parishad (Swachip) have urged all healthcare professionals to continue their services for patients without panicking over coronavirus contagion.

Talking to the media, BMA President Dr Mustafa Jalal Mohiuddin said they are more or less satisfied with the measures taken by the government to protect doctors and medical staff.

Dr Jalal made the statement while addressing an event, jointly organized by BMA, Swachip, and Health Reporters’ Forum, at BMA Auditorium in Dhaka on Monday.

"We are more or less satisfied with the initiatives taken and already noted the shortcomings that we found," he added.

He also said a committee is being formed to monitor whether the personal protection equipment (PPE) is reaching the medical staff properly.

Meanwhile, BMA Secretary General Dr Md Ehteshamul Huq Choudhury said the physicians' community needs to understand that not everybody needs PPEs.

“Only those working in isolation or dealing with such patients should work with full protection. Others don’t need PPE right now,” he said.

Physicians both in and outside Dhaka have been complaining that they have not received proper safety equipment or are arranging PPEs on their own at a time when many returnees from abroad are visiting the hospitals by hiding their travel history.
