Health minister: Ad-Din students can continue studies

He said medical colleges operate independently of hospitals and that alternative arrangements could be made for students’ clinical training and practical classes

Health Minister Sardar Md Sakhawat Hossain has sought to ease concerns over the future of students at Ad-Din Medical College following the cancellation of Ad-Din Medical Hospital’s licence, saying the medical college and hospital are separate entities.

“The government has closed the licence of the hospital, not the medical college,” the minister told reporters on Monday.

He said medical colleges operate independently of hospitals and that alternative arrangements could be made for students’ clinical training and practical classes.

“A hospital is required for practical training. Students can be provided with that opportunity at other institutions,” he said.

Responding to a question about the clinical education of Ad-Din Medical College students, the minister said there are other hospitals nearby where students could receive training.

However, he did not specify whether the government would designate a particular hospital for the students.

“We have closed the hospital and revoked its licence. I am not willing to comment on other matters, sorry,” he said.

The health minister also said the government remains firm on ensuring accountability in the healthcare sector.

“We want to ensure quality healthcare services for the public. If anyone commits irregularities, action will be taken. If you or I do anything wrong, we should be punished,” he added.
