Chhatra League paints alpana as part of protest against DU student rape

Students from the Faculty of Fine Arts of Dhaka University (DU) painted alpana from the Ruqayyah Hall gate to the Raju memorial sculpture as part of their protest against the rape of a fellow student.

The artwork was initiated by DU unit of Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) on Tuesday.

Md Saddam Hussain, Chhatra League’s DU unit General Secretary, told Dhaka Tribune: “The Dhaka University family is mourning now. We demand the safety of women everywhere across the country, including inside all campuses.

“If the Home Ministry fails to capture the criminal within 24-hours bas per the ultimatum issued by the  Dhaka University Central Students’ Union (Ducsu), they have to be prepared for a social movement led by Chhatra League,” said Saddam, also the assistant general secretary of Ducsu.

Saddam termed the use of colour and brush on the streets as a symbolic language of protest.

A figure of a man, a flying pigeon, and a barbed wire fence were drawn on the streets.

Painter Biprajit, a third year student of Ceramic department, said: “A pigeon is a symbol of peace. We are showing here that the peace is escaping men as they are falling under the grasp of moral degradation.

“The wired fence symbolizes our society and how it confines our women in every sector,” he added.
