Civil societies in Bangladesh have criticized the Indian Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) and the National Register of Citizens (NRC), saying this will affect Bangladesh in the future.

Dhaka University Professor Emeritus Serajul Islam Choudhury said: “The spokesperson of the government of Bangladesh is saying NRC and CAA are India’s internal problem, but the statement is misleading. NRC and CAA will affect Bangladesh for sure.”

He made this remark while speaking at a roundtable organized by the Gana Sanghati Andolan on NRC and CAA at the premises of Dhaka Reporters’ Unity in the capital on Tuesday.

“If our neighboring country is on fire, Bangladesh will bear the brunt as well,” he added.

He said that people of India are also criticizing the whole act by their government.

He said: ”The protest against CAA and NRC is very significant because I believe South Asian nations are marching forward to find a solution to this ethical conflicts through these protests.”

Dr Zafrullah Chowdhury, founder of Gonoshasthaya Kendra, said: “People should march towards the Indian High Commission in Bangladesh to show their protest against NRC and CAA.”

He also said that people in Bangladesh should boycott Indian products as a form of protest.

The award-winning Bangladeshi photographer and activist Shahidul Alam said he has to go through lots of hassles every time to get an Indian visa, which he believes is caused by his social media posts against the Indian government.

“I once got my Indian visa a day after the date on which I was scheduled to give a lecture in India,” he said, adding he was not given a proper reason for the delay by the Indian High Commission.

“All conscious citizens should take to the streets to protest,” he added.

Gonosanghati Andolon Chief Coordinator Zonayed Saki was present in the program along with others.
