Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) Mayor Atiqul Islam said legal actions will be taken against the councillors who have even slight association with corruption.

He made this remark on Wednesday, in a press conference held at DNCC’s own building in Gulshan.

The mayor said, if any evidence of irregularities and corruption against a councillor gets proven, legal action, along with the city corporation's own law, will be taken against that individual.

He said: “Anyone involved in corruption will not be exempt. Legal actions will be taken if anyone tries to forcefully take control of house, land, footpath trading, or any other wrongdoing.

“If the complaint is proven, an expulsion letter will be sent to the ministry for that councillor in accordance with the prevailing laws of City Corporation.”

DNCC show caused 9 councillors

DNCC also sent show cause letters to nine councillors for being absent at regular meetings.

“We sent show cause letters to nine councillors to explain the reason behind them missing the board meetings,” the mayor said.

“We have the rule to serve anyone with a show cause notice, who misses three board meetings. Since, all of them fit that criteria, I sent them show cause notices.

“If their justifications are not satisfactory, legal actions will be taken against them,” mayor Atiqul added.

36 satellite fire station will be launched

For the first time, 36 satellite fire stations (moving vehicle) are set to be launched in order to decrease the causality of fire in Dhaka.

The DNCC mayor also informed the media about it following his arrival from C40 meeting in Denmark.

He said: “We have signed an MoU with Denmark to launch 36 satellite fire stations in Dhaka.”

“These vehicles are for tackling the initial stages of a fire incident. If any fire incident takes place, these vehicles will be able to move faster, and will continue its work till the required support arrives at the spot,” said the mayor.

He also added that the satellite fire station is equipped with modern technology, and can carry 3000 to 10,000 litres of water in each vehicle.

Mayor Atiqul furthered that DNCC is going to collaborate with schools in DNCC areas in order to introduce electric vehicles for school children. They will replace all streetlights with LED lights to decrease carbon emission.
