A court in Moulvibazar has sent Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) Councillor Habibur Rahman Mizan to jail in a case filed under the Arms Act.

Police produced Mizan before the Chief Judicial Magistrate Court around 11am on Tuesday, after he was shown arrested in the case filed by Rapid Action Battalion (RAB).

Md Anwaruzzaman, superintendent of Moulvibazar jail, said: “Councillor Mizan was transferred to Moulvibazar prison from Dhaka on Sunday. When he was produced before the court this morning [Tuesday], the court denied him bail and sent him to prison.”

Earlier on October 20, the DNCC councillor was sent to Dhaka jail after completion of his seven-day remand in a case filed under the Money Laundering Prevention Act.

Mizan, councillor of DNCC's ward 32 and the former general secretary of Awami League's Mohammadpur unit, was detained in Srimangal on October 11 while he was trying to flee to India.

As part of the ongoing crackdown on casinos, RAB members later raided his residence located on Aurangazeb Road in Mohammadpur, and recovered cheques worth Tk6.77 crore, and Tk1 crore in FDR.
