Earlier in the morning, a team of Rab-9 arrested him from Srimangal upazila of Moulvibazar district

As part of the ongoing crackdown on casinos, members of Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) have recovered cheques worth Tk6.77 crore, Tk1 crore in FDR, and Tk2 lakh in cash during a raid at the Mohammadpur residence of DNCC Ward Councillor Habibur Rahman Mizan.

Earlier in the morning, a team of Rab-9 conducted a drive at Srimangal upazila of Moulvibazar district and arrested Councilor of Ward no-32 of Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) Mizan alias Pagla Mizan.

RAB Executive Magistrate Sarwoer Alam confirmed the matter to the reporter at his house located on Aurangazeb Road in the evening.

He also said that a team of RAB conducted a raid at Mizans friend's house in Sylhet’s Srimangal around 5am and detained him. The elite force also recovered a pistol, four bullets, a magazine and Tk2,00,000 cash.

"However, we did not find anything at his office," he added.

Mizan withdrew TK68 lakh before his arrest

RAB Executive Magistrate Sarwoer Alam said Mizan had withdrawn Tk68 lakh in cash from a bank.

However, he did not say from which bank Mizan took the money and for whom. It is suspected that he withdrew the money as he was trying to flee abroad, the executive magistrate added.

No income, but houses in Texas, Sydney

The RAB executive magistrate said they could not determine the sources of Mizan's money. Mizan did not have any source of income except the monthly honorarium from the city corporation, and rent of around Tk90,000 from his three houses.

Mizan has houses in Texas, USA and Sydney, Australia. He also owns three expensive cars in the two countries.

"We suspect that he has illegal income. We will investigate the matter," said Sarwoer.

Accused of carrying out attack on Sheikh Hasina

Mizan and his brother Mostafizur Rahman had been affiliated with Freedom Party. They are also accused in a case over the attempted murder of current Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in Dhanmondi in 1989, said RAB Executive Magistrate Sarwoer.

Investigation will reveal the extent of their involvement in the crime, he added.

He also said that there are allegations that Mizan was involved in drug dealing, land grabbing, and extortion.

Two cases to be filed against Mizan

The RAB executive magistrate said there will be two cases filed against Mizan: One under the arms act and another under the money laundering act.

"Mizan will be handed over to Srimangal police station in Sylhet," he added.

Since September 18, RAB and police have raided different clubs across Bangladesh in the search for illegal casinos. A number of people, including several Jubo league leaders, have been arrested after the raids.

Sources said Councillor Mizan suddenly disappeared during the government's ongoing campaign against corruption.

Many of the people in Mohammadpur know the councillor as "Pagla Mizan." He reportedly got the name due to an incident decades ago, when police chased him into a pond and he emerged without clothing to avoid arrest.

During the raid at Mizan's house, a number of people took to the streets and chanted slogans demanding that he be hung to death.
