Police are yet to make any arrests in the Gulshan hit-and-run case, despite the passage of more than 30 hours, since the incident took place in broad daylight.
However, police said they have ceized the vehicle, which is registered with a business firm A N Corporation.
On Friday morning, Liyana Tripura Popy, a 23-year-old student, who was also a beauty parlour employee, was killed when a vehicle ran over the rickshaw carrying her, and her colleague Srabanti Tripura on Road No 79 at Gulshan. Both were critically injured, and taken to a private hospital, where Liyana was declared dead.
Liyana’s younger brother Joyonto Tripura filed a case over the incident with Gulshan police station.
Gulshan police station Sub Inspector (SI) Robiul Haque, investigation officer of the case, said they traced the vehicle with the help of Mohammadpur police around 11am yesterday.
“The vehicle was recovered from the parking lot of a residential building. As the vehicle had been abandoned there, we were not able to arrest anyone,” he said.
Quoting the caretaker of the building, located at 2/6 Mirpur Road, the SI added: “The driver of the vehicle is not a resident of the building, but he used the garage.”
The SI further said, the registration number of the vehicle had been confirmed by looking at CCTV footage of the accident, and the search for the driver is underway.
The Dhaka Tribune could not independently verify the ownership of the vehicle, as the Bangladesh Road Transport Authority (BRTA) office was closed yesterday.
Liyana’s body was taken to Dhaka Medical College for autopsy, before being taken to her ancestral home in Bandarban’s Thanchi upazila. Joyonto Tripura confirmed that Liyana would be cremated in the morning today.
Expressing immense disappointment with the lack of arrests, Joyonto claimed that the police were not taking the matter seriously.
“Who cares whether the vehicle involved in the accident was tracked down or recovered? We just want the culprits to be arrested as soon as possible,” he said.
Liyana, the second of three siblings, moved to Dhaka four years ago, and managed to get a job at a beauty parlour in Gulshan two years ago. She was a second year student at Bandarban Government College.
