A nationwide phone survey, conducted across eight divisions of Bangladesh over the recent casino drives, has suggested that 97% of the people support the crackdown in Dhaka.
The study was unveiled at the Sagar Rooney auditorium of Dhaka Reporters Unity on Sunday.
Research International, a research and communication strategy development affairs firm, carried out the survey among 4,100 people between September 28 to October 3.
Of 4,100 people, a total of 2,866 received the call, and 1,760 responded the survey related questions.
Australian expatriate Professor Dr Abul Hasnat Milton, who conducted the research, said: “A total of 58% respondents believe that leaders of all parties, who came to power in different terms, were directly involved with the illegal casino business while 34% think that some of the current leaders have indirect involvement.”
Moreover, about 83% of respondents think that the license should not be issued for casinos in future, he added.
Dr Abul further said they used 15,000 people's contact number and divided them into different occupation based class. Therefore, the study can easily be represented as the opinion of Bangladeshi people.
Satisfaction on PM and ruling party
The survey also suggested that almost 99% respondents expressed satisfaction on Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s governance with 75% saying very satisfied while 24% expressed moderate satisfaction.
Also, about 88% respondents believe that Sheikh Hasina's government can free Bangladesh from corruption and terrorism. They also think this crackdown is going to improve the ruling party's image among people.
Among other assistant researchers, Kazi Ahmed Parvez, part-time faculty of Bangladesh University of Professionals (BUP), Mosharrof Hossain, development and research analyst, were present at the event.
They claimed that they chose this medium (cell phone) of survey as 83% of the population own mobile phones with internet connection, said a survey of January 2018.
