Former Dhaka University (DU) Professor and critic Syed Manzoorul Islam stressed the need for establishing social justice in every sphere of society.
Manzoorul Islam said: “Establishing justice is the constitutional duty of the state. But there is a lack of justice in all parts of society. Media needs to be more responsible in establishing social justice”.
He came up with the remarks while presenting a keynote paper in a seminar titled “Journalism for justice” organized by DU Mass Communication and Journalism department to mark its 57th founding anniversary at the RC Majumder auditorium of the university.
Manzoorul Islam further said that the media played the role of the main deck to ensure the fundamental rights of the people. “It can solve many problems of the society,” he added.
“There is nothing neutral. Neutrality never goes to the victim, but to the oppressor. So, Media should work for the truth and justice” Manzoorul Islam said.
DU vice-chancellor (VC) Prof Dr M Akhtaruzzaman addressed the function as chief guest and Dean of Social Science Faculty Dr Sadeka Halim as special guest.
Dr Akhtaruzzaman said: “There are periods of extreme instability in our society. But to establish justice, media can be a very important source and play responsible role in such times”.
Chairperson of the department Prof Kaberi Gayen presided over the program. She said: “Journalists have to stick to establish the truth. Media should tell the truth to people by not only revealing the facts but also by in depth information from the incident”.
Earlier around at 10am, teachers and students of the Mass Communication and Journalism department brought out a colorful rally from the base of Aparajeo Bangla, also organized a prize distribution ceremony and discussion program at the RC Majumder auditorium.
Mehjabin Bashir Tuli and Shams Rahman were awarded for achieving tremendous result in the honors final and first year finals respectively.
The Mass Communication and Journalism Department of DU started its journey through diploma courses on August 2, 1962 and it is now offering undergraduate, postgraduate and PhD degrees.
