BNP Secretary General and Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives Minister Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has said there is no government interference in the media.
"Rather, there is a tendency to create divisions among journalists and push one another aside," he said.
He made the remarks while speaking at a program jointly organised by the Bangladesh Federal Union of Journalists (BFUJ) and the Dhaka Union of Journalists (DUJ) at the National Press Club on Monday, marking the second anniversary of the July Movement.
Information and Broadcasting Minister Zahir Uddin Swapon and State Minister Yasser Khan Choudhury also addressed the event.
Fakhrul said transparency in the media required the appointment of qualified professionals.
"It is important to ensure that competent people are appointed in the media to maintain transparency," he said.
Referring to the July Charter, Fakhrul said a committee had already been formed to implement it.
"There are differing opinions on whether the issue requires reform or amendment. These matters should be discussed in parliament," he said.
He also urged political parties to avoid escalating disagreements.
"The opposition is speaking outside parliament in the same way Sheikh Hasina used to. We should not allow the situation to escalate into conflict," he said.
