Dhaka North City Corporation Mayor Atikul Islam announced annual awards for wards under his jurisdiction yesterday.
At a program to tackle mosquito issues, the mayor said there will be a Mayor Award every year from 2020 for the best ward in the DNCC. He announced the Mujib Year Award for the ward that provides the best citizen service.
The mayor stressed the importance of local authorities, citizens, government and non-government organizations, and public leaders to galvanize awareness of mosquito-borne diseases.
He said if people help the DNCC, the dengue and chikungunya diseases can be neutralized very easily.
Writer and columnist Syed Abul Maksud said citizens bear 90% the responsibility to prevent mosquitoes from spreading.
He called for youth to be involved as well.
The program was also attended by former Bangladeshi cricketer Akram Khan, artist Moniruzzaman, entomologist Dr Manzur Ahmed Chowdhury, mosquito specialist Prof Kabirul Bashar among many other dignitaries.
