3 held with 3.260kg gold at Dhaka airport

The estimated price of the recovered gold bars is Tk1.05 crore

Customs Intelligence and Investigation Department (CIID) and Airport Armed Police Battalion (APBN) in separate drives have arrested three men along with 3.260kg gold bars worth of Tk1.05 crore at the Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport.

The arrestees – Syed Ahmed, 70, Md Harun, 36, and Erfanul Islam, 42 – arrived in Dhaka from Sylhet on a Biman Bangladesh Airlines flight (BG0236) at 2:30pm on Friday afternoon.

Confirming the matter, CIID Deputy Director Payel Pasha told the Dhaka Tribune that acting on a tip-off a team of detectives were keeping a close watch on the passengers at the domestic terminal.

At one point, the CIID team challenged two passengers, Ahmed and Harun, but they denied having the gold bars. Later, they were taken to the green channel, he added.

The team found eight gold bars weighting 932grams wrapped up with scotch tape inside a spectacle box Ahmed was carrying while Harun confessed of having 10 gold bars inside his rectum, said the official.

Later, the gold bars were removed from his rectum in a special process, he said.

Meanwhile, APBN Additional Superintendent of Police (Operation and Media) Alamgir Hossain said another detainee Erfanul was in a hurry to take a taxicab from the domestic terminal after landing in Dhaka. “Being suspicious, we detained him,” he said.

Later, Erfanul admitted that he was carrying gold bars weighting around 1.160kg inside his rectum, said the official adding that those bars were removed from his rectum in a special process.

Legal action has been taken against the arrestees.
