Dhaka north Mayor Atiqul Islam has said that all buildings in Dhaka north must comply with the fire code and he will soon take measures to enforce the laws.
The mayor was accompanied by acting general secretary of ruling Awami League Mahbubul Alam Hanif as he spoke to reporters on the Kamal Ataturk Avenue around 10:30pm Thursday.
“This tragedy is a message for all of us. All buildings in Gulshan and Dhaka north must comply with the fire codes.”
Within a few days the Dhaka North City Corporation will issue notices in newspapers asking all building owners to submit their designs, he said.

“There will be zero tolerance of violations,” he said.
“Many buildings have converted their parking spaces to storage areas or commercial space,” he said.
“I urge the building owners to fix their fire safety issues by their own initiative. You cannot say that you have already constructed the building and it cannot change,” he added.
The mayor announced that there would be drives soon.
Mahbubul Alam Hanif praised the hard work of the firefighters, saying their efforts had minimized the loss of lives.
Asked about irregularities in building construction that may have contributed to fire risk, the senior leader said the Housing Ministry had already formed a committee and they would be looking into the matter.
