Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Commissioner Asaduzzaman Mia has revealed that the Suprovat Paribahan bus, involved in an accident that killed a student, was operating without a route permit.

He made the statement at a view exchange meeting titled “Raising awareness about traffic discipline,” held at the Mohanagar Nattomoncho, in Dhaka, on Thursday.

The DMP commissioner continued: “The Suprovat Paribahan bus that was involved in the recent accident, lacked a valid route permit. The police had also filed 27 lawsuits, including fines, against the vehicle.

“The route permits of one Suprovat and two Jabal-e-Noor Paribahan buses have been cancelled. These two companies have also been ordered to submit all legal and fitness-related documents of their buses to the authorities concerned.”

Asaduzzaman Mia said that only the buses that have proper fitness and other legal documents will be allowed to ply on Dhaka's roads, while the rest will be impounded immediately.

Urging the student protestors to resume their classes, the DMP commissioner said: “Be responsible and don’t cause the suffering of millions by blocking the roads.”

“We have arrested driver and seized the bus. Since the collision occurred on a zebra crossing, the driver can be tried for maximum punishment,” he added.

At the conclusion of the event, the DMP commissioner requested everyone to be united in ensuring discipline on roads and highways.
