Update : 24 Mar 2017, 02:04 AM
With his feet dangling excitedly high up in the air, Atikur Rahman Amin, a college student, kept looking down from his controlled parachute at the Bangladesh Army paratroopers with an equal measure of fear and glee. “I want to join the army as soon as I can,” he told the Dhaka Tribune as soon as his feet was firmly planted on the ground, at the military hardware exhibition of the Armed Forces Division. The exhibition at the National Parade Square, inaugurated by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Wednesday, is a biannual event commemorating Independence Day by showcasing the Armed Forces artillery and equipment. It is open to the public until March 27 with 32 stalls from the Bangladesh Army, six from the Air Force, six from the Navy and four from the Armed Forces Division, that allow people to actively experience what it is like being in the armed forces. The army has also set up a shooting stall where Ratan Ali, a small goods trader, was shooting empty rounds. He said he felt like he was in the movies. The grounds of the old airport, now the National Parade Square, was full of people on Thursday getting to see everything from an antiquated mix of MiG fighter jets to the current fleet. People are allowed to get inside tanks with the help of an army personnel letting visitors get up close and personal with operational instructions for educational purposes. Major Syed Masudur Rahman said almost all of the armed forces equipment is on display including infantry, armored and artillery, engineering, signal, medical corps, para-commando battalion instrument and a wartime bunker that visitors can enjoy. Speaking about the replicas of the newly acquired submarines on display, Navy Commander M Humayun Kabir said: “The first ever submarines of the naval fleet – Nabajatra and Joyjatra – just made us a three dimensional force and is a source of national pride.” Director of Inter Services Public Relation Directorate (ISPR) Lt Col Md Rashidul Hasan, G-1 (Media) Intelligence Director of Armed Forces Division Commander M Shaheen Majeed,  Bangladesh Army Major Syed Masudur Rahman, Bangladesh Navy Commander M Humayun Kabir and Bangladesh Air Force Wing Commander Md Mamunur Rashid were present at a briefing on Thursday. President Abdul Hamid is set to visit the exhibition on March 25. The exhibition will be open to the public till March 27 from 9:30am to 5:30pm and only open to family members of the Armed Forces Division and students of schools and colleges in the cantonment on March 28 from 9:30am to 5:30pm.
