Six DU hall unions get independent VPs, 12 from Chhatra League

Voting in the Ducsu and hall union polls Monday was marred by reports of gross irregularities

Bangladesh Chhatra League candidates were elected vice-president (VP) at 12 out of 18 halls in Monday’s Dhaka University hall union polls, according to unofficial results announced by the returning officers till 1am Tuesday.

Based on the results, independent candidates secured six VP posts and four general secretary (GS) posts in six halls, reports Bangla Tribune.

The ruling party student wing’s panels took the GS posts in 14 halls.

The results of the major posts of DU Central Students Union (Ducsu) were unavailable till the filing of this report at 1am.

In Kabi Sufia Kamal Hall, all 13 posts went to the independent panel, with Tanzina Aktar Suma and Munira Sharmin elected as VP and GS, respectively.

Independent candidate Ricky Haider Asha was elected VP at Bangamata Sheikh Fazilatunnesa Mujib Hall, and the GS post was taken by Sara Binte Jamal of the Chhatra League panel.

In this female dorm, three out of 13 positions were taken by independent candidates and the rest went to Chhatra League.

In Shamsunnahar Hall, general students elected independent candidates in eight posts including Sheikh Tasnim Afroze Emi as the VP and Afsana Safa as the GS.

The rest of the posts went to the Chhatra League panel.

In Amar Ekushey Hall, independent candidate Md Mehedi Hasan Sumon was elected VP and Chhatra League panel’s Ahsan Habib GS.

In Fazlul Huq Muslim Hall, independent candidate Mahmudul Hasan Tomal and Chhatra League’s Mahfuzur Rahman were elected VP and GS, respectively.

Independent candidates also won four more posts in this hall.

In Bangladesh-Kuwait Maitree Hall, independent candidates won five posts of the hall union, with Susmita Kundu and Sagufta Bushra elected as VP and GS.

The other eight posts went to Chhatra League.

Meanwhile, in Ruqayyah Hall, which saw the major complications after the voting started, Chhatra League panel’s Ishrat Jahan and Saima Aktar were elected VP and GS, respectively.

In Haji Muhammad Mohsin Hall, Shahidul Haque Shishir and Mehedi Hasan Mizan of Chhatra League panel were elected VP and GS.

In Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Hall, Chhatra League’s Akmal Hossain and Mehedi Hasan Shanto were elected VP and GS.

Two of the 13 posts in this hall union also went to independent candidates.

In Muktijoddha Ziaur Rahman Hall, the Chhatra League panel won all 13 posts, with Shariful Islam Shakil and Hadibul Hossain Shanto elected as the VP and GS, respectively.

Chhatra League panel’s Md Farhad Ali and Imam Hasan were elected as VP and GS, respectively, in Kabi Jasimuddin Hall.

All 13 posts in the Bijoy Ekattar Hall union also went to the Chhatra League panel, with Sajibur Rahman and Nazmul Hasan Nishan elected as VP and GS.

In Surja Sen Hall, Mariam Zaman Khan Sohan and Siam Rahman of the Chhatra League panel were elected VP and GS, respectively.

In Dr Muhammad Shahidullah Hall, Chhatra League panel won all 13 posts, with Hossain Ahmed Sohan and Irfanul Hye Sourav elected as VP and GS.

All 13 posts in Salimullah Muslim Hall went to Chhatra League too. MM Kamal and Julius Caesar were elected VP and GS.

In Zahurul Haq Hall, Chhatra League’s Saifullah Abbasi was elected VP and independent candidate Toufiqul Islam GS.

The Chhatra League panel also won all 13 posts in Jagannath Hall. Utpal Bishwas and Kajal Das were elected VP and GS.

In AF Rahman Hall, Chhatra League panel swept all 13 posts, with Abdul Alim Khan and Abdur Rahim elected as VP and GS.

Voting in the Ducsu and hall union polls took place from 8am to 2pm Monday at 16 halls, amid allegations of gross irregularities.

The balloting at Kuwait Maitree Hall and Ruqayyah Hall started several hours late due to different complications, and continued until the evening.

Dhaka University students took part in the voting to elect representatives in 25 Ducsu posts and 13 hall union posts in each dormitory.
