The two day operation came to an end around 4pm yesterday

Update : 24 Feb 2019, 10:25 PM

Flammable substances, including several types of hazardous chemicals, both powdered and liquids, have been relocated to Keraniganj from the buildings affected by the fire at Churihatta in Old Dhaka’s Chawkbazar.

The chemicals were fully moved from the area yesterday.

The move came amid growing criticism from different quarters following Wednesday’s deadly fire that killed at least 67 people and injured many others.

The stockpiles of the chemicals were shifted by firefighters and shop owners under the supervision of Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC), with assistance from police, after a two-day effort to this end.

Earlier, the authorities concerned started the operation to relocate the chemical items around 10:30pm on Saturday.

Sources said, several trucks and pick-up vans were used in this regard, which altogether made 21 trips to ship the chemicals from Churihatta to Keraniganj.

The operation came to an end around 4pm yesterday.

Nasir Uddin Ahmed, a DSCC official, who was tasked with the shifting, said: “Shop owners and Fire Service men, with the help of police, took the chemicals to Keraniganj.

“DSCC was monitoring the entire process,” he said, adding, “they were also keeping a record of the total amount of the chemical stocks shifted.”

He went on to say the higher authorities will decide the next course of action regarding the chemicals.
