‘I don’t want anyone to lose their loved ones’

Banners in memory of the victims of the tragic incident filled the area, as the citizens came together to question the cause of the fire

Citizens on Saturday gathered at Chawkbazar’s Churihatta, to mourn the victims of Wednesday’s tragic fire in the area and to visit their friends and family.

Banners in memory of the victims of the tragic incident filled the area, as the citizens came together to question the cause of the fire.

An old man was seen staring at a banner. He kept repeating “no one should lose their loved ones.”

The banner was dedicated to Wasi Uddin Mahid, one of the 67 people who lost their lives in the devastating fire.

The old man, Nasir Uddin, was torn apart seeing the banner dedicated to his only son.

Looking at the banner, he said: “I lost my elder daughter to cancer on December 16 in 2011, and now I have lost my only son. These are tough times and I don’t want anyone to lose their loved ones anymore. For that, we need a permanent solution.”

Explaining why the residential buildings have warehouses of chemicals and cosmetics in basements, he said: “After facing difficulties in acquiring home loans from banks, small land owners resorted to funding from businesses.”

“Businessmen who needed warehouses in ground floors would pay an advance fee of Tk8-10 lakh to help owners build their home.”

“For a couple decades now, this is how families built their homes on their limited ancestral lands.”
