The Bangladesh Road Transport Authority (BRTA) has been instructed to expedite the removal of expired gas cylinders used for public transports, said Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader.
He made the comment while visiting the burn unit of Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) on Friday morning.
The minister said: "The government is thinking of restricting the use of gas cylinders in vehicles. The secretary concerned has been instructed to come up with a suitable alternative."
Meanwhile, the prime minister has ordered the relocation of hazardous chemical warehouses from the Old Dhaka area as soon as possible, he added, urging the Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) to take necessary steps in this regard.
Quader, also the Awami League general secretary, further said: "There is no alternative to removing the chemical warehouses, as we saw that minor neglect can bring about major calamities."
On Wednesday night, 67 people were killed and more than 50 injured in a fire in Chawkbazar, Old Dhaka. The injured were admitted to the DMCH burn unit.
DMCH Burn Unit Coordinator Dr Samanta Lal Sen said: "Everyone in the burn unit is in critical condition."
