Four committees to probe Chawkbazar fire incident

At least 67 people were killed and scores injured in the devastating fire incident

Four separate probe committees have been formed to investigate the massive fire that ravaged several multi-storey buildings at Nanda Kumar Lane in the Churihatta area of Chawkbazar, Old Dhaka on Wednesday night.

At least 67 people were killed and scores injured in the devastating fire incident.

The home ministry formed a five member high profile committee, headed by Additional Secretary of Security Services Division Pradip Ranjan Chakraborty, to investigate overall issues, identify the reasons behind the fire, and make recommendations.

The other members of the committee include the director general of Fire Service and Civil Defence, a representative of the Dhaka Deputy Commissioner’s Office (of the rank of additional deputy commissioner), a representative from Dhaka South City Corporation (of the rank of joint secretary), and deputy police commissioner of Lalbagh Zone of Dhaka Metropolitan Police.

The committee has also been assigned to make recommendations on a work plan to avoid any massive fire accident in future. The committee may co-opt one or more members if required.

The Industries Ministry formed a 12 member committee headed by Additional Secretary Md Mufizul Hoque to inquire into the incident and submit a report in five working days.

The committee will identify the cause of the fire, assess damages, and make recommendations.

Meanwhile, Fire Service and Civil Defence has formed a three -member committee led by its deputy director (operations), to look into the incident and submit a report in seven days.

On Thursday, Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) also formed a 10 member committee to identify risky and fire-affected buildings. The committee includes representatives from the city corporation, Fire Service and Civil Defence, Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET), and Rajdhani Unnayan Kartripakkha (RAJUK).
