The Detective Branch (DB) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police has arrested one of the three teachers of Viqarunnisa Noon School and College, who are accused of provoking the school’s ninth grader Aritry Adhikary to commit suicide.

Hasna Hena, who was the morning shift class teacher of Aritry’s section, was picked up from the capital’s Uttara area around 11pm on Wednesday, DB’s Deputy Commissioner Khandokar Nurunnabi told the Dhaka Tribune.

He said DB West Division’s Assistant Commissioner Atik had led the team that arrested Hasna Hena.

The two others accused in the case started by Aritry’s father Dilip Adhikary are Acting Principal Nazneen Ferdous and morning shift in-charge Zinat Akhtar of the school, located in the city’s Bailey Road.

The case filed Tuesday at Paltan police station was transferred to DB for thorough investigation earlier in the evening, DB Joint Commissioner Md Mahabub Alam told reporters.

Around the same time, the governing body of Viqarunnisa Noon School and College had terminated the employment of Nazneen, Hasna and Zinat following government orders after two days of widespread protests surrounding Aritry’s death.

Viqarunnisa students, with support from their parents, had launched the protest on Tuesday, a day after the 15-year-old girl’s body was found hanging from the ceiling in her room at her Shantinagar residence.

According to the case documents, Aritry killed herself after she along with her parents was summoned to the school and severely rebuked by the three accused on Monday, as she was reportedly caught with a mobile phone during an examination the day before.

On Wednesday, following the student’s demonstrations demanding justice for Aritry, the government cancelled the facilities the three teachers had been enjoying under its Monthly Pay Order scheme.

The Education Ministry had also asked police and the Rapid Action Battalion to take legal action against them after Dilip filed the case.

Two investigation committees were also formed on Tuesday by the government and the school authorities.
