The body of Golam Sarwar, editor of Bangla daily Samakal and founding president of the Editors’ Council, who passed away in Singapore on Monday night, arrived in Dhaka last night.

His body reached Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport around 10:30pm by a flight of Singapore Airlines.

He will be brought to his Uttara residence from the airport, reports UNB. Later, the body will be kept at the BIRDEM mortuary.

His body will be taken to his birthplace in Banaripara, Barisal today, where people will pay homage to the renowned journalist. After a janaza there, the body will be brought to Dhaka.

It will be taken to Samakal office around 9am on Thursday where his colleagues will pay last respect. His janaza will be held at the Bangladesh University of Textiles grounds nearby.

At 11am, the body will be brought to the Central Shaheed Minar for one-and-a-half hours for people from all walks of life to pay homage, under the supervision of Sammilita Sangskritik Jote.

From the Shaheed Minar, Sarwar’s body will be taken to the National Press Club for journalists to pay tribute before his last janaza there after Zohr prayers.

He will be buried at Mirpur Martyred Intellectual Graveyard after Asr prayers.

Sarwar breathed his last around 9:25pm Monday while undergoing treatment at Singapore General Hospital at the age of 75.

The Editors’ Council in a message said Sarwar’s demise had created an irreplaceable vacuum in Bangladesh’s journalism, especially at a moment where his astute guidance and experienced mentorship was most needed.

“He has been an untiring crusader for journalistic freedom and fighter for the rights of journalists,” said a statement sent by the Council Secretary General and Daily Star Editor Mahfuz Anam.
