A man was killed after being run over by a car owned by the wife of Awami League MP Mohammed Ekramul Karim Chowdhury in Dhaka on Tuesday.

Witnesses said Salim Bepari, 50, was crossing the road at Mohakhali when he was hit by an Audi car around 10pm.

They claimed that Noakhali 4 lawmaker Ekramul's son Shabab Chowdhury was driving the car when the accident took place.

The car’s logo and licence plate (registration number Dhaka Metro-Gha 13-7655) had come off after the accident. They were found beside Salim’s body near the Setu Bhaban.

BRTA sources said the car was registered under the name of the MP’s wife Kamrun Nahar Shiuli, who is also the chairman of Kabirhat upazila in Noakhali.

Shabab allegedly fled the scene and took refuge in the NAM Bhaban on Manik Mia Avenue, where his father has a government-allotted flat.

One of the men, who followed Shabab to the NAM Bhaban, said a witness had managed to enter the building premises.

“The MP’s son threatened him before physically assaulting him and snatching his mobile phone containing images and video of the accident. The man was later forced out of the building premises,” the witness, declining to be named, said.

Kafrul police station’s duty officer Sub-Inspector Nasir Uddin said the son-in-law of the deceased Salim had filed a case accusing unidentified people riding the car at the time of the accident.
