People from not only Dhaka but also its outskirts bring their families to the grounds of Bangla Academy and Suhrawardy Udyan, particularly the latter’s Children’s Corner.
Saklain Gourab, an intermediate student from Notre Dame College, said his father Golam Mustafa, a government college principal, and mother Naznin Akhter, a high school teacher, visited the fair on Friday from Kishoreganj while he and his sister met them at the fair.
They spent half the day there, buying many books to add to their own family collection.
Meanwhile, many children were charmed by the Children’s Corner as it was decorated with scenes of the popular TV play “Sisimpur.” The characters were present as well to meet and play with the children.
Publishers too were exuberant about the turnout and book sales.
Giasuddin Khasru of Jhinge Phul Publication said children visit regularly over weekends, especially the Children’s Corner.
He said his publishing company saw the highest revenue from children’s book sales on Friday as their eye-catching storybooks are animal-shaped, feature ghosts and rhymes which grabbed the children’s attention.
A children’s art competition was also held with 640 children taking part in three age categories. Results will be announced on February 17.
In comparison to earlier days, on Friday saw higher book sales with a greater number of visitors, especially children. A total of 313 new books came out, with 43 being formally unveiled.
