Debaters from various universities and colleges across Dhaka on Saturday formed a human chain at Projonmo Chattar of Shahbagh, to protest against various incidents of sexual harassment which took place during the mass gathering of Awami League on Wednesday, March 7.
While addressing the human chain under the banner of “Debater Society,” Vice president of Debate for Humanity Fahmida Hasan Bappi said: “We the women have to take steps to protest against the repression we face. A debater Aditi protested against the harassment that she experienced. We have come here to say that we are standing by Aditi. The whole of society must take a stand against such harassment.”
Jahangirnagar University Debate Organization President Mushfiq Us Salehin said: “We are here to raise social and public awareness. We want proper investigations and justice for all the incidents of sexual harassment.”
After the human chain program, demonstrators brought out a procession from Shahbagh which ended at the TSC’s Anti-Terrorism Raju Memorial Sculpture.
Aditi Bairagi, a debater and student of Viqarunnisa Noon School a College, posted the description of the harassment she faced on her Facebook timeline. The post went viral, and many women subsequently posted their own experiences of harassment on March 7, raising public outcry.
